It discourages the bacteria that cause the most damage without carpet-bombing the rest. In lab studies, niacinamide slowed the growth of Streptococcus mutans, the bacterium most responsible for cavity-forming acid and plaque and reduced how much biofilm it could build. In animal models, that translated to fewer cavities forming over time.
It quiets the bacteria behind gum irritation. A 2024 study found niacinamide works against Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium linked to gum inflammation by blocking its ability to absorb iron, essentially starving out the aggressor while leaving the rest of your mouth's ecosystem intact. In animal models, this showed up as less bone loss and calmer, less inflamed tissue.
It supports smoother, faster-feeling recovery. When formulated with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide (in its related form, NMN) improved healing in animal models of oral tissue irritation resolving irritation faster than hyaluronic acid alone.
And in real patients, it's already showing up as a better experience. In a clinical study following dental surgery, patients using a niacinamide-enhanced rinse showed significantly better early healing scores and rated the taste far more favorably than those using a standard antiseptic rinse alone.
